2016-2017 Family Engagement Plan

    School Introduction:

The Family Engagement Plan (FEP) is organized into four impact areas. We will be working together this year to build positive and goal-oriented relationships in each area. Families and staff at school developed this plan together.

    Welcoming Environment

Our school has staff member(s) available for families to discuss this plan and ask questions

    ·       Family Liaison: Lee Yang

    ·

Our school communicates with families in many ways.

    ·       Mailings, letters in parents’ languages

    ·       School website

    ·       Flyers sent home with students through period 5 classes

    ·       Phone calls home with interpreters available

    ·       When families call, email, or send a note, we do our best to respond within 24 hours.

The achievement gap, or rather the “opportunity gap,” between students of color and white students in Saint Paul Public Schools is unacceptable. Our school is working to change practices and systems by identifying the barriers that make it harder for students of color to succeed and for their families to support their learning.

    ·       For more about our work on racial equity, contact: Rose Santos, Principal

    ·       The goal of the school is to have staff who represent the demographics and languages of our students.

Transitions between schools can be challenging, and we work to help families as their children start and leave our school.

For new students and families, we support the transition by:

    ·       Open house before school starts

    ·       Student/parents conferences four times each year with language grouped meetings to explain school rules, expectations and help available if needed by families.

    ·       Student Ambassadors welcome new students who come in after the school year has started

    ·       Full time nurse and social worker to help with needs of families, including social and emotional needs in addition to medical needs.

    ·       1.5 full time counselors to help students and their families with all issues related to school and college opportunities

For students and families moving to the next school in their pathway, we support the transition by:

    ·       For students over 21, we have a pathway to continued schooling at adult programs in the metro area

    ·       CNA Certified Nursing Assistant program for students interested in a nursing career.

    ·       Naviance for all students beginning in level 2A to explore college and career opportunities.

    Family Partnerships

Our school-parent compact establishes the shared responsibility for student success between the school, families, and students. Families and teachers work together to develop the compact.

    ·       Copies of the compact are available: Families receive the compact at Open House, conferences, sent home with students, as well as when registering at the school.

    ·       The compact will be updated: May 2016

There are many opportunities for families to build connections to the school and to each other.
