Work Based Learning

  • The Work-Based Learning Coordinators at Gordon Parks High School assist students in their search for jobs, volunteering opportunities and internships in the community as part of the Occupational Internship offered to all students. Students may earn up to 2 credits through Occupational Internship activities such as volunteering, a job, or community related work.

    Career Seminar class provides a FACS (Family and Consumer Science) requirement and is offered in 2 different ways to all students: 1. A two hour Career Seminar class is currently offered on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students may earn up to 1 credit per quarter in the Career Seminar class.
    2. During the Advisory time (15 minutes in the AM and PM sessions) students are exposed to the same Career Seminar Curriculum as a part of their 6 year Plan. Students may earn .25 of a credit during each quarter. Students may also earn a Basic Work Readiness Certificate by completing 5 components including 1. Employment Application, 2. Cover Letter/Letter of Application, 3. Resume, 4. 100% on Safety Test (From Chapter 17 in the Book “Working” and 5. A successful Job Interview.

    In addition to Coordinating Work-Based experiences, teaching Career Seminar and co-teaching Advisory a course called Home and Auto Maintenance and Repair class is offered in the AM and PM sessions. Students may earn 1 credit per quarter and learn practical Home and Auto skills including wood working, basic carpentry, auto maintenance, and an introduction to small engines.
