    Friday, November 13th - Nonfiction Booktalk - student will meet with a parent volunteer to discuss the realistic book they choose to read this month. Completed Booktalk form required.

    School Store Open (from the Perspectives):

    Horace Mann School Store Opening Tuesdays & Thursdays It’s this time of year again! The School Store is going to open next Tuesday, October 6th! This year the School Store has the brand new school trinkets! From erasers to pencil cases to highlighters and more! The price range is from 5¢ to $4, and is run by trustworthy 5th graders, raising money for their end of the year over-night field trip, Eagle Bluff! The School Store is Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:15 to 8:30 AM. Have a great school year! PS. Don’t forget, 25¢ pencils available in machine by front door.


    General Grade 5 Curriculum Information

    AR reading comprehension tests will be used this year. Frequently asked questions and answers can be found on the documents attached below.  AR tests are only taken at school.

    Welcome to the Fabulous Fifth Grade at Mann Elementary.  Mrs. Tarnofsky and Mrs. Fridlund are your lead teachers. Together we bring many years of experience. We enjoy this age group. It is a joy to watch children develop their confidence, leadership qualities, and sense of self.  This is an exciting time and year with many opportunities for growth.  This is a year when students take ownership of their learning and gain greater independence.  Here are some components of our day and the fifth grade curriculum. 

    READER’S WORKSHOP

    Your child is participating in Reader’s Workshop this year. The workshop approach aims to provide all students with small group instruction using materials that are appropriate to each student’s individual reading level.  Students will read and examine a variety of literary genres.

    Structure
    Reader’s Workshop happens every day for 60 minutes.  The period begins with a mini-lesson that is delivered to the whole group.  The mini-lesson provides the focus for the days reading and responding. After the mini-lesson, students break off into groups.  Guided reading groups meet with a teacher for 15-20 minutes.  During this time, the other students are working on…

    Assessments

    The reading program is driven by data.  Students are assessed using the Mondo Benchmark, QRI, or Jerry Johns Basic Reading Inventory.  The students will be assessed at least 2 times throughout the year.  The assessments help teachers tailor instruction and assignments to the specific needs of the student.  Consistent analysis of the data means that groups are fluid and that children will be grouped according to their reading needs throughout the year.

    25 Books and Booktalks- All 5th grade students are expected to read 25 books this school year.  The books should be from a variety of genres and can include nonfiction, biographies, poetry, myths, legends, and works of fiction. Students will be required to complete a written and oral assessment of specified genres.  A calendar and further details will be sent home at the beginning of the year.

    Differentiation
    The Reader’s Workshop allows for instruction to be individualized based on test data.  Students who are reading below grade level will receive instruction that is aimed at the specific comprehension skills and practices that need strengthening.  Students who are at or above grade level will have the opportunity to participate in Book Clubs. Book Clubs teach students how to delve deeper into the text, book discussion skills, and responsibility while still applying and reinforcing comprehension strategies.  Students have the opportunity to choose books and projects that appeal to their unique skills and interests.  Reader’s Theater is another enrichment opportunity for students.

    MATH WORKSHOP

    The Everyday Math curriculum focuses on number sense, shapes, space, geometry, measurement, algebra, chance and data handling.

    WRITING WORKSHOP

    Writing is so important in our lives.  It allows us to communicate and compose our ideas and thoughts.  Writing helps us understand ourselves and the world around us.  Our Writing program is based on balanced literacy methods that are presented through the use of the school district adopted Writer's Workshop and the Six Traits of Writing components.  A main goal of the program is to help students make strong connections between literature and writing.  The six traits we learn about are:  ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions.  Concrete lessons and writing activities spark students' imagination and interest to write. 

    When students arrive in class they're eager to start writing! Our first introduction into living the Writerly Life is looking at the life of writers and what makes a piece of writing good.  Students work on collecting seed ideas or entries in their writer's notebook.  Future writing units include: Personal Narrative, Interpretive Essay, Research-based Argument, Biography, Literary Essay, Poetry and Memoir.
