Health/Physical Education
The Health/Physical Education department at Gordon Parks High school is committed to the belief that all students are able to learn at a high level. Health and Physical Education classes are required for graduation and meet Minnesota academic standards.

Physical Education Standards and Benchmarks
Standard #1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Benchmarks
1. Demonstrate competence (basic skills, strategies, and rules) in an increasing number of more complex versions of at least three different types of movement forms.
2. Assess competence in two or more types of movement forms.
Standard #2: Demonstrates an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Benchmarks
1. Analyze basic offensive and defensive strategies in games and sports.
2. Identify the characteristics of highly skilled performance in at least three movement forms.
3. Independently apply advanced movement-specific information.
4. Recognize personal strengths and weaknesses in an activity.
Standard #3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Benchmarks
1. Independently maintain an active lifestyle using their skills, knowledge, interest and desire.
2. Seek and select physical activities from a variety of movement forms based on interest, meaning and fulfillment.
3. Develop and implement a personal physical activity program meeting their needs.
4. Understand how activity participation patterns are likely to change throughout life and use strategies to deal with those changes.
Standard #4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Benchmarks
1. Meet district fitness standards.
2. Use principals of F.I.T.T. training for the purpose of modifying levels of fitness.
3. Demonstrate skill, knowledge and desire to monitor and adjust activity levels to meet individual fitness needs.
4. Participate regularly in health-enhancing fitness activities.
Standard #5: Personal and Social Behavior
Exhibits safe, responsible behavior that respects self and others, while accepting diversity in physical activity settings.
Benchmarks
1. Apply safe practices, rules, procedures and etiquette in all physical activity settings.
2. Display constructive competition and sportsmanship through appropriate participation.
3. Use equipment and facilities safely and responsibly.
Standard #6: Lifetime Behaviors
Understands the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Benchmarks
1. Recognize that physical activity can provide a positive personal social experience.
2. Recognize the physical advantages of physical activity.
3. Develop an appropriate conditioning program to engage in for life.
Health Standards and Benchmarks
Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
- The students will analyze the interrelationships of mental, emotional, social, and physical health throughout life.
- The students will analyze the impact of personal health behaviors on the functioning of the body systems.
- The students will describe how to delay onset of potential health problem (based on daily life choices, heredity, environment and other influences).
- The student will analyze the role of public health policies and laws in the prevention and control of disease and other health problems.
- The students will analyze how the prevention and control of health problems are influenced by research and medial advances.
Standard 2: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health promoting products and services.
- The students will analyze the cost and accessibility of health care services.
- The students will analyze situations requiring professional health services.
Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.
- The student will research and evaluate strategies to manage stress in individuals and groups in school, work and/or social situations.
- The student will develop strategies to reduce health-threatening situations in the community.
- The students will develop strategies to improve or maintain personal, family and community health.
Standard 4: Students will analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and other factors on health.
- The students will select and assess a school or community health issue resulting from the influence of culture, media, technology, and other factors and implement a solution for that issue.
Standard 5: Student will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.
- The student will evaluate the effectiveness of communication methods for accurately expressing health information and ideas.
Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision making skills to enhance health.
- The student will evaluate different strategies to use when making decisions related to the health needs and risks of young adults.
- The students will design, evaluate and implement a plan for attaining a personal health goal.
- The student will formulate a plan for optimal, lifelong health.
Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
- The students will evaluate the effectiveness of communication methods for accurately expressing health information and ideas.
- The student will adapt health messages and techniques to the characteristics of a particular audience.
