January seemed to go as quickly as it came and here we are in February! This is a special month for many reasons and most importantly it's Black History Month. Students have been engaging in activities around Black History in their GP Connect Classes. Monday, February 10th is NAAPID Day and we invite families to come to an open house at Gordon Parks. You may stop in at any time during the day to tour our building, meet teachers, and check-in with your student. No RSVP is necessary and we'd love to welcome you to our great school!

We want you to know our staff members, both new and returning. This month we are highlighting Joe Beard, our new SSL and Carl Thomas, our returning SSL.

I began working at Humboldt High School as contract security when I moved to Minnesota in 1993 from Louisiana. At the time, I also worked in a print shop. I came to Gordon Parks in 2015 and in 2020 my role changed to SSL. I enjoy helping students as they work on hands-on projects in the shop and I also enjoy helping them stay focused on their goal of graduation.

I was born and raised in New Orleans and lived there until I moved to Minnesota in 1993. Most of my family still lives there and I visit every 2 years. I have a wife, 5 children, and 16 grandchildren. In my free time I like fixing cars and working on home improvement projects.

Quarter 2 grades are now available for review in Campus, our school database. We encourage students and families to check their progress and reach out with any questions. School counselors are available to help students track their progress toward graduation.

Gordon Parks students will be participating in statewide testing in February and March. Currently, students who are considered English Language Learners are taking the Access test, which measures English proficiency. In March, 10th grade students will be taking the MCA Reading test and 11th grade students will be taking the MCA Math test. In May, qualifying students will be participating in the MCA Science test. If you have any questions about the assessments, contact the school office at 651-744-1212 and ask for the testing coordinator.
